I was born and raised in Fernie, a very small town in British Columbia located by the Rocky Mountains. At the time, Fernie had a population of about five thousand.
When I was a very small child, my parents would bring home cases of grapes to make wine, and we would grow tomatoes to make pasta sauce every year. I would try to help my parents bring cases in, but they were too heavy for me until I was about 10 years old. I was so proud to help, and my parents knew it – it was my job every year from that day on.
My family had two huge gardens in our back yard.. And I mean huge! A normal sized garden is around 10 x 10 ft, but my parents had gardens about 30 x 50 ft big!
My dad built a small green house to grow tomatoes. Fernie never got hot enough to grow them outside, so a green house was the only way. Watching my parents and their love for food and gardening taught me a lot at an early age.
Now when I have people over for dinner, I make pasta sauce using my mothers recipe, and everyone really likes it. My son’s friend, Jakey, even asked to take some home with him.
One day, we ran out of ingredients to make sauce, and bought an off-the-shelf sauce to quickly make something to eat. We were shocked with the lack of taste it had in it. I mentioned to my wife that I should put my mothers pasta sauce recipe in a jar and sell it. She thought it was a good idea, so I started looking into the pasta sauce industry. That’s how Raffaele di Mamma was born!
I always remember what my mother used to say to me, “Always put love in your food, and it will always turn out great!”
Raffaele is a 100% Canadian-based company.
Our brand and recipes were conceptualized in Oakville, Ontario.
Our sauce is processed in the food processing facility at University of Guelph, so support for Raffaele is also support for local schools and students!
